How do I know if I need to replace my water heater?
No Hot Water: The most typical indicator of a failing water heater is the lack of hot water. You may need a new water heater if your water is less hot than it used to be or runs out more frequently. Running out of hot water is caused by sediment build-up over time.
Age of Water Heater: Typically, water heaters have a service life of 8-12 years. If your unit is nearing the end of its service life and begins to malfunction, it may be time for a replacement. You can determine the age by checking the serial number located on the manufacturer’s sticker. These are usually at the top of the tank; most manufacturers list the manufacturing date as the first two numbers.
Discolored Water: Hot water that becomes rust-colored can indicate that your tank is corroded inside and may begin to leak soon. If the hot water is only discolored and not cold, you need a water heater replacement. The corrosion from the inside of the tank causes small rust particles and could cause leaking when flushed.
Leaking Water: If you notice water leaking from your tank, you should have it replaced immediately to prevent it from worsening and causing significant damage to your home. Check for cracks in your tank to ensure the leak is coming from your water heater and not another source.
Strange Noises: There could be a leak if you notice noises such as rumbling coming from your water heater or running out of hot water. The sound could be a build-up of sediment, which decreases your water heater efficiency and could cause cracks due to the pressure.
